Physics of Shrinkage

We aren't talking Seinfeldian shrinkage here - that's biology. I'm talking about the shrinkage of my Merino wool hiking socks, or, for that matter, almost any piece of natural fabric clothing. Why does it happen? Is it irreversible? Does this have anything to do with flux compactification in string theory?
