Name that Politician!

After a troubled and tempestuous youth which included many failures and even run ins with the law, this politician pulled himself together and achieved many of his goals.

About his campaign style:
In his speeches, [He} offered the [People] what they needed most, encouragement. He gave them heaps of vague promises while avoiding the details. He used simple catchphrases, repeated over and over...

His campaign appearances were carefully staged events...

Success:
Money was flowing in from ... industrialists who saw the [Party] as the wave of the future. They invested in [Him] in the hope of getting favors when he came to power.

Despite a brilliant and exceptionally ruthless campaign he failed to get a plurality in the election. By various maneuvers, however, he contrived to get himself appointed to the position he coveted.

With the aid of a terrorist attack (that some claimed was enabled by the government itself), he was able to consolidate power, suspend many civil liberties, and start a war against a much weaker power. That war didn't turn out as well as he hoped.
